Controlled Air Design
Raleigh
Web Development
You never know where a client might come from… Eamonn Shanahan was referred to Imp Designs by a drinking buddy/musician buddy of mine. Eamonn needed a website that he could manage himself to display his line of industrial vacuums and dust collection equipment. Remember that science experiment where all purpose flour was blown up to great effect? Yeah… these products help keep commercial bakeries, wood working shops, and other production plants with volatile or combustible dusts from blowing up.
Controlled Air Design stocks a variety of products and accessories. The site needed to manage the display of these products and make it easy for site users to filter and sort the products according to need. Since this is primarily a business to business site, it also needed visible and effective call-to-action elements.

Web Development
Steve Palmé is a fellow member of City Club Raleigh’s Leads One business group. He had been struggling with an old WordPress site and decided to give Imp Designs a shot at redesigning his site. Thankfully he was open to our ideas about the site including getting custom photography (sometimes stock photography just doesn’t get the job done). The photography was done by Steve’s friend, Patrick McCaully, and it turned out wonderfully.
After reviewing the supplied photos, our designer Jer Warren created a look that utilized some of the colors present in the photography. The end results were quite nice and the site is much more inviting than the old site which used a mostly blue corporate template.
Moving to ExpressionEngine was a little challenging for Steve at first. We trained him in use of ExpressionEngine and now that he’s had a bit of time with the system, he’s found it much more user friendly than his previous site. We coded the site such that he can edit virtually anything on the site, so he also has a bit more control over content than he used to.
The site is utilizing Solspace’s Freeform Next form processing software which has a VERY robust form spam prevention function. We also made sure a site visitor was never too far from a contact form—each practice area page has a prominent contact form that reports which practice area the site visitor was on upon submission.
Overall this site was one of the most enjoyable builds we’ve done in a while… even though the research phase produced some awkward conversation with our spouses! (Um… honey… is there something we need to talk about?)
Visit SiteMontshire Museum of Science
Norwich, CN
We were first introduced to the Montshire several years ago when they came to us to address an issue with their ExpressionEngine website. Some pages on their site could take up to a minute to load! We identified an issue with the template coding which was causing the problem and fixed it. Subsequently, we were hired to develop a mobile version of the site using the existing look and feel.
In 2018, the Montshire decided it was time for a design refresh. We were happy to have been selected as the vendor to do this and the resulting site is some of our best work. Staff at the Montshire did a remarkable job with planning and wire framing the layout making our job infinitely easier to complete.
The new site is fully responsive and takes great advantage of ExpressionEngine’s new fluid field type. The event calendar is powered by the Solspace Calendar Add-on and allows staff to create recurring events easily. The site contains a messaging system which, if active, displays a message that can be dismissed for the duration of the visitor’s session.
Visit SiteRegional Anesthesia Associates
Durham, NC
Learning how to spell the variations of ‘Anesthesia’ was a serious challenge on this project. Regional Anesthesia Associates had an old site that had originally been built with Apple’s iWeb site builder tools. Since iWeb was discontinued in 2011, it had been some time since their site had a design refresh. The firm had also begun to see their website as more than just a ‘digital billboard’ — they wanted a new site to work as a recruiting tool and a patient educational tool as well as a marketing presence.
The new site was built in ExpressionEngine and includes a patient information section, information about the various facilities serviced by the firm and recruiting information for Physicians and CRNAs (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologists).
Visit SiteGlobalRX
Hillsborough, NC
We love when we get referrals from existing clients! Our client, Ten Plus Systems, referred GlobalRX to us for a site refresh and redesign. Their existing site wasn’t easily editable and had a bit of a dated look and no mobile friendly version. We created an ExpressionEngine site with a responsive design—now GlobalRX can update their site as necessary without having to wait on someone with HTML skills to get involved.
One other challenge on this site was providing the New Drugs Approval content on the Resource page. GlobalRX had been compiling the list manually and submitting to their web developer who would then write the html and publish. Often the delays caused by manually compiling and manually updating the site caused the list to be out of date before it was published. We learned that the site they used as their primary source for this information had an RSS feed, so we set up the site to display the data. Now this chore is automated and always up to date.

Full redesign
Nash Community College approached us to redesign their main website after we successfully created a ‘mini-site’ for their online school. Their existing site had a very flat information hierarchy—counting links in drop down menus, there were over 170 links on their home page! Their primary issue was “nobody can find anything” and we felt this was primarily an issue with organization. We met with them, developed a set of site goals, and re-organized the entire site. Most of the work in this project was the planning; we were very fortunate to have collaborative project leads that listened to our ideas.
The site is a responsive design with 4 views: mobile, tablet, desktop and super sized desktop. We use Susy Compass SCSS processor to manage the breakpoints and CSS.

Pine Glo Products is a North Carolina owned and operated cleaning supplies company. Nash Online
Rocky Mount, NC
Web Design and Development
Nash Community College needed a full redesign for its online learning programs. We provided a complete reorganization and redesign of the site making it a lot easier to navigate. In addition, the site is fully responsive and works extremely well on a multitude of devices.
Our goal was to provide prospective students an easy way to start the enrollment process. We had to balance that goal with the needs of existing students looking for learning resources. Overall we’re happy with the end result, but more importantly, students and staff seem to be too!
Go ahead and take a look, then stand on the shoulders of giants!

Logo and Poster Design
SAEA needed a poster and logo to advertise their 2014 conference in Raleigh NC. Imp worked with SAEA to create a logo and poster to be displayed prior to and within the conference site. We also provided this as an online resource for local groups that wanted to promote the conference.
Henrys Fork Anglers
Island Park, Idaho
Logo recreation
Henry’s Fork Anglers already had an existing logo. However, the version they had was not high quality and was limited in the way it was used. The original logo was a bitmap image that was not easily scalable and would not print sharply. Imp Designs recreated this logo allowing it to be used in a variety of ways. The logo is now fully scalable and is suitable for printing in multiple sizes. We also adjusted the layout to include a long version, stacked version, and a version with no text.
Rimguard Inc.
Raleigh, NC
Logo Design
Rimguard Inc. was looking for a new look for their logo. Having recently changed their company name they needed something that would stand out in a variety of spaces. Imp Designs provided a solution in a logo that is not only stunning in 4 colors, but also looks just as good in two colors or just one. Whether the logo is emblazoned across a large truck or simply used on a business card, the logo has the same impact.
NC Medical Board
Raleigh, NC
Web Design and Development
We met the executive director of the NC Medical Board while visiting our favorite watering hole… only we didn’t know it at the time. We were actually a bit skeptical when he asked for a business card — we’ve never been happier to be wrong.
Our biggest challenge with the site redesign was organization. There’s a lot of content in this site and it serves two distinctly different audiences; medical professionals and consumers. We never could have completed this project without the assistance of the board’s public affairs department who not only listened to our suggestions, but participated enthusiastically in the process.
Since the site relaunched, the board has entrusted us with two other projects and a minor interface refresh.

Web Design and Development, Photography and Internet Marketing
We met Autohaus owner Doug Rogers at the Capital City Club’s Leads One group. He had a cookie cutter site that he didn’t feel was properly representing his import repair shop. Boy was he ever right! Autohaus Import Service’s waiting room is freaking amazing! Large screen TV, wireless internet, work-space, coffee… it’s nicer than my living room!
The site contains several cool features, most of which are managed via ExpressionEngine 2. The site utilizes a couple of nifty Jquery goodies; the slideshow is powered by the Cycle plugin and we leveraged the Jquery UI plugin for the several interface elements. In addition to the design and development of the site we also provided photographic services.

Visit SiteHomewarmth

There’s no better compliment than a client that asks us to redesign their site a second time. When Homewarmth first started their business, they were a fireplace company that did a little insulation work. So we built a site showcasing the various products they sold in their showroom.
In the last few years, Homewarmth has closed their showroom and shifted their emphasis to home insulation services. They hired us to redesign their site to reflect this change and we were happy to oblige. The new site contains targeted call to action forms and gives staff the ability to add and edit services and their descriptions at will.

It was great working with the folks at TenPlus and, as customers ourselves, we highly recommend them for Apple sales and support in the Raleigh-Durham area.
Visit SiteMotor Works

Web Design, Development and Internet Marketing
Since our redesign of Autohaus Import Services website, we’ve been getting inquiries from other auto repair shops. Marty Fay, owner of Motor Works in Dekalb, Illinois had seen the Autohaus website and had phoned the owner to check us out. Apparently the beers I occasionally buy for Doug at Big Boss Brewery were well worth the cost as Doug gave us a great review.
We’re very glad he did, because the Motor Works crew has been a blast to work with. One of Marty’s niche businesses is the repair of classic cars and this site features an impressive collection of stories about classic car repairs. The classic car section is a must visit for car nerds; honestly some of these photos are breath taking (and I’m not a car nerd!).
The site is an ExpressionEngine 2 install that has a bit of jquery goodness to help things along. In addition to the site redesign, Marty has entrusted us with his search engine optimization and pay-per-click ad management.
